A 10 cm length of peeled sola, the wood that gives way first. Soft enough for a budgie's first bite and gone in a session for anything larger, which is the point: this is the part you use up.
Thread them onto leather to rebuild a toy whose soft parts have been chewed away, wedge one through the cage bars for a bird who will not approach a hanging toy, or bundle a few together with a strip of vegetable tanned leather for a five-minute toy.
